The second widespread mineral in the Earth and also present in different kinds of stones, crystals like granite and quartz is Silica and causes the disease Silicosis. People like miners, stonecutters, construction workers build this state. Hence it’s called grinder’s disease, mason’s disease. When the silica powder is breathed in, it surrounds the lungs and causes irritation, swelling, redness and scratch tissue in the organ.


The three types of silicosis include: Chronic Silicosis - A state due to long lasting exposure of 10 to 20 years to silica fibers. Accelerated Silicosis is a state due to large amount of silica fibers in a short period of 5 to 10 years. Acute Silicosis is a state that develops within weeks or within 5 years of being exposed to silica.
Silicosis has symptoms similar to tuberculosis and has caused many deaths of people working primarily in cutting, grinding silica materials. Silicosis is incurable and in 2002 around 145 people died due to problems related with the disease. People die even during the treatment. The symptoms comprises of breathlessness, serious cough, tiredness, chest pain, fever and other respiratory disorders. Usually, treatments include medication for suppressing cough and antibiotic treatment, chest physiotherapy to remove mucus from lungs. Sometimes lung transplantation is done to reinstate lung tissue. Treatment for silica is unsafe and the patient has to take it for the whole of remaining life and is very expensive. Provisions are there to file charge sheet against those responsible for this and can demand for the medical expenses.
